Specialist species setups are led by Adnan, co-founder of AD Aquatics, with over 5 years of experience designing and installing cichlid systems. Adnan has deep expertise in territorial layout planning, species-specific water chemistry and compatible stocking strategies for both African and South American cichlid species.
Cichlids and specialist species require more consideration than typical community fish. Their territorial behaviour, specific water chemistry requirements and dietary needs demand an experienced hand. Adnan designs every specialist setup from the ground up — species first, then hardscape, filtration and stocking strategy. - African Cichlids — Mbuna, Peacock, Haps (Lake Malawi & Tanganyika biotopes); pH 7.8–8.5, hard alkaline water
- South American Cichlids — Discus, Angelfish, Oscars, Geophagus, Apistogramma; pH 6.0–7.2, soft acidic water
- Discus — premium warm-water planted or bare-bottom setups; 28–30°C, pH 6.0–7.0, very low GH/KH
- Flowerhorn & Large Cichlids — robust setups with reinforced filtration and adequate territory

Frequently Asked Questions
Can cichlids be kept with other fish?
It depends on the species. Many African cichlids are best kept in single-species or compatible cichlid communities. Some South American cichlids work well with other species. Adnan will plan compatible tankmates during your consultation based on size, temperament and water parameter requirements.
Do cichlids need live plants?
Many cichlids — especially African mbuna — will dig up or eat plants. We use robust Anubias tied to rocks, or plant-free rock biotopes for African setups. South American and discus systems can coexist beautifully with live plants if species are chosen carefully.
What water parameters do African vs South American cichlids need?
African cichlids need hard, alkaline water: pH 7.8–8.5, high GH (10–20°dH) and KH (10–15°dH). South American cichlids and discus prefer soft, acidic water: pH 6.0–7.2, low GH (2–8°dH), low KH (1–4°dH). What size tank do cichlids need?
Most cichlid communities need at least 150–200 litres for adequate territories. Oscars need 300+ litres alone. Lake Malawi mbuna communities do well in 200–300 litre tanks with heavy stocking to spread aggression. Adnan will specify the correct tank for your chosen species.
