  • Dragon Stone (Ohko) — earthy brown with complex surface texture

  • Slate — flat layered stone for dramatic cliff/mountain formations
  • Limestone — for African cichlid biotopes (raises pH naturally)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the rock type affect water chemistry?

Yes — some stones like limestone and certain sandstones can raise pH and hardness over time. This is desirable for African cichlid setups but not for soft-water species. We select stone appropriate to your chosen fish species. See our water parameters guide →

Can I have plants with a rockscape?

Yes — plants can be attached to rocks using fishing line or glue (Anubias, Java fern, mosses), or planted in gaps between stones. This creates a beautiful contrast between hard and soft elements.

What fish suit a rock formation setup?

African cichlids are the classic choice — the rocky environment mirrors their natural Lake Malawi/Tanganyika habitat. Hillstream loaches and other rock-dwelling species also work beautifully. Iwagumi-style rockscapes pair well with small schooling fish and shrimp.
