Biotope & Blackwater Setup
Example biotopes shown for style reference — amber blackwater angelfish tank (Ewkaa, CC BY-SA 4.0) and a driftwood river biotope with wild discus and cardinal tetras (Citron, CC BY-SA 3.0), both via Wikimedia Commons. Your finished tank is designed around the specific habitat and species you choose.
A real habitat,
not just a fish tank.
AD Aquatics is an aquarium installation and maintenance specialist founded by Adnan and Hasan, serving London and the Home Counties with UK-wide availability by arrangement. Our Biotope & Blackwater setup replicates a specific wild habitat — most commonly an Amazon blackwater stream — rather than a general community aquascape. Tannins from driftwood, leaf litter and botanicals stain the water amber-brown and soften and acidify it naturally.
This is a more specialist style than our standard planted or community setups: species, hardscape and water chemistry are all selected to match one real biotope, giving a genuinely naturalistic result. AD Aquatics sets the initial water parameters, sources the botanicals, and can point you to the specific wild location the biotope is modelled on.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in the £750 Biotope & Blackwater setup?
£750 includes the tank and cabinet, filtration, heating, subdued lighting, dark substrate, driftwood and leaf litter, tannin-releasing botanicals, compatible fish, and professional installation with full nitrogen cycle management.
What makes blackwater different from normal aquarium water?
Blackwater is stained amber-brown by tannins released from driftwood, leaf litter and botanicals such as catappa (Indian almond) leaves. It is typically soft and acidic — pH 5.0-6.5 — replicating rivers like the Rio Negro. See our UK tap water hardness guide for how this compares to your local supply.
What fish suit a blackwater biotope?
Wild-type tetras, apistogramma, corydoras, and Amazon-origin angelfish are classic blackwater biotope species. We select species and water chemistry to match a specific real habitat rather than a general community mix.
Will the tannin-stained water look cloudy or dirty?
No — properly set up blackwater is clear, just amber-tinted, similar to weak tea. Cloudiness usually indicates a bacterial bloom rather than tannin staining, and we'll show you how to tell the difference during handover.
